Individual Assignment #1 (As you add more individual assignments, put each new assignment ABOVE the previous one. Add a horizontal line between the assignments).
Create a new WIKI page using your initials and the name of your novel(s) as the title. Link it to your main page.
As you read your story, pay attention to the following:
Name the major character(s). Name the minor character(s). In what ways do the minor character(s) affect the main character(s)?
What decision(s) has a character made that you totally disagree with. Tell why you disagree with it.
How does this story change your thinking?
Write your ideas on your WIKI page. This should be an ongoing assignment throughout the week. As you read more chapters, add more information.
Your insights can be written using bullet points, using short sentences, or writing paragraphs - your choice.
Due date: Friday, March 9
1. The major characters in The Book Thief are the narrator(Death), Liesel Meminger, Rosa Hubermann, Hans Hubermann, and Rudy Steiner.
The minor characters in The Book Thief are Mrs. Meminger, Warner Meminger(Liesel's brother), Tommy Müeller, Pfiffikus, classmates of Liesel, and Mr. Steiner.
The minor characters have big affects on the major characters. For example, Mrs. Meminger affects Liesel by lowering Liesel's self-esteem by giving her to a foster home. Also Warner affects Liesel by being the reason of her nightmares. Finally Mr. Steiner affects Rudy by lifting Rudy up and showing him right from wrong. The little brother affects Liesel because he gives her nightmares and she is so sad because he died. T
2. I disagree with Hans and Rosa fighting so much. I disagree with this because they are husband and wife and husband and wife should be best of friends and not be mean to each other. Also because Rosa and Hans fight so much and swear at each other Liesel could learn bad words and say them in public. Then she could get in trouble.
3. This story changes my thinking of the German people as they supported Hitler. I didn't know how some German people thought about Hitler rising to power like Hans did. He believes in what he believes in and doesn't care what others think. I also can't hold anything back on German people because first I am of German decent and because it wasn't the people's fault that Hiltler took power over in Germany. About ninety percent of the people in the book support Hilter, so it was difficult for people to go against the majority. They would have also gotten punished.
I agree with you on your last statement. Many followed Hitler out of fear rather than loyalty. That punishment could be death, so it was easier to go along with the crowd rather than risk death. That is why Hitler's plan worked. Brainwashing and following blindly kept people from taking a stand against what they knew was wrong.

The Book Thief
By Markus Zusak
Astonishment is felt by the reader as he or she realizes The BookThief is told through the eyes of death. In this historical fiction published by New York Times, Markus Zusak explains how death happens frequently and in large numbers in Germany during World War II when Hitler rises to power and comes close to wiping out the race of Jews. Through the main character, Liesel Meminger, and other supporting characters like Hans Hubermann, Rosa Hubermann, Rudy Steiner, and Max Vandenburg a clear picture is given of the fear both Jews and Germans face as bombs hit, Jews are treated inhumanely, and Germans are forced to follow the ways of Hitler. Death visits often and takes innocent lives in this novel. The story takes a turn and the life of Liesel, the book thief, changes each time she steals a book.
The things that happen in the story center around Liesel Meminger, the main character. She goes to live with foster parents after her brother dies and her mother can't take care of her. Liesel becomes friends with significant characters in the novel like Rudy, Max, Frau Holtzapfel, and the mayor's wife. All of these characters are helped through the friendship they have with Liesel. Stealing books gives Liesel a good feeling, so she does it often in the story. She feels good when she steals because she loves to read and she feels like stealing is something she is good at. Lives are affected by the books Liesel steals. Liesel creates a friendship with Max Vandenberg, a Jew, who hides in the Hubermann's basement. Max comes to their home to hide because he is the son of the man who saved Han's life a long time ago. Liesel helps Max survive with his boredom of living in a basement and sadness of not being able to see the outside. The story discusses Liesel and Hans torn with the right thing to do when they want to go against Hitler and feed the Jews on their death walk. They both decide to feed the Jews bread and get in trouble for it. Liesel is the only person who survives on Himmel Street when a bomb hits at the end of the story, besides Mr. Steiner. Max, a Jew who was so close to death also survived.
The theme of the story is courage. Different characters show courage in the story like when Liesel and Rudy steal food from the farms. The Hubermann's show courage when they take in Max because they could get in a lot of trouble if they are found out. Max shows courage when he leaves the Hubermann's basement because he doesn't want to get them in trouble. One lesson learned is that no race should be looked at as better than another race because all people are made by God. A second lesson learned is that everyone should stand up for what he or she believes in like Hans and Liesel did when they fed the hungry Jews. The story was sometimes hard to follow when Markus Zusak told about flashbacks and then told about things that were going to happen in the future. I would make things a little clearer. Overall, I thought The Book Thief was a good book because it gave a lot of information about World War II that I didn't know before. The story also showed me how difficult it was to live during World War II for both the Germans and Jews.
